Project |01 Plant Cell Walls

For my PhD dissertation, I studied the structure and biomechanics of plant cell walls and mechanisms of cell wall loosening using atomic force microscopy. I am fortunate to use such a cool tool to see an entirely different world of plants!

Project |02 Orchid Floral Development

For my undergraduate thesis, I studied the expression and function of genes involved in the floral development of the Phalaenopsis orchid. So much fun to use the gene gun to create baby transgenic orchids and grow them on medium with coconut and banana pulp!

Project |03 Foxing and Papers

Foxing is an age-related process of deterioration that causes spots and browning on old paper documents such as books, postage stamps and certificates. I investigated the cause of foxing stains on ancient Chinese papers at the Museum of Shanghai History and identified the relevant fungi species for the purpose of paper document preservation. It was a treasured experience to be in touch with our ancient papers hand made hundreds of years ago.
